February 18 - March 15, 2026This exhibition marks the first two-person presentation of works by Alicia Adamerovich and Christopher Daharsh, and their first exhibition in Wellington. Married and based in New York, the artists share a daily proximity that quietly informs their practices. Created in close dialogue, the paintings and works on paper gathered here reflect a period of personal and environmental transition.

The title, We’ll Understand It When We’re Older, gestures toward deferred clarity — the recognition that certain emotional states only fully reveal themselves in retrospect. Developed during a time of relocation and altered domestic rhythms, the works consider how interior psychological experience shifts alongside changes in landscape and season. Abstraction becomes a way of holding what language cannot yet resolve.

For this body of work, Adamerovich looked to artists such as Arshile Gorky and Arthur Dove — not as fixed touchstones, but as resonant interlocutors. Like them, she allows form to hover between landscape and interior vision. Biomorphic shapes cluster, tilt, and radiate within ambiguous atmospheric space, acting as conduits for projected feeling rather than literal figures. Color is structured by mood and light: saturated passages can feel citrus-bright and destabilizing, while muted tonalities create atmospheres of quiet or suspended tension. The paintings oscillate between tenderness and unease, intimacy and estrangement.

Daharsh, in developing these paintings, found himself thinking about Edvard Munch, Gustav Klimt, and particularly the Finnish painter Pekka Halonen. After moving to a more rural home marked by long winters and heavy snowfall, the experience of painting through winter became central. Halonen’s snowy landscapes — their stillness, compression, and psychological quiet — offered a point of reflection as Daharsh worked through his own shifting terrain. His oil and charcoal paintings accumulate through walking, looking, and memory; forms swell and cluster like growth pushing upward through frozen ground. The surfaces feel geological and atmospheric at once, shaped as much by season as by emotion. The works on paper register a more immediate tempo, tracing gestures that suggest drift, thaw, and gradual emergence.

Installed together, the eleven works form a shared field of atmosphere rather than a mirrored dialogue. The artists’ references emerge from the particular needs of these paintings — seasonal, psychological, situational — rather than allegiance to any singular lineage. What binds the exhibition is not stylistic sameness, but a mutual sensitivity to transition: to the ways environment, memory, and anticipation subtly reshape perception over time.

October 17 - November 16, 2024“Picture Theory is delighted to announce the first solo exhibition with New York based painter Christopher Daharsh. Dancing in the Firmament invites audiences to delve into the intricate relationship between the human psyche and the natural world.Daharsh transforms blank canvases into dynamic landscapes that embody shifting states—fractals that evoke the essence of dusk and the turbulence of storms, rendered in vivid, embodied strokes. His work navigates the delicate interplay between man-made and natural elements, drawing attention to the often-overlooked beauty found in the tension between them.Firmament is described as the “arch of the sky,” where the heavens meet the earth and serve as a physical barrier between them. In reference to biblical cosmology, firmament is the solid dome created by God during the world’s conception. In Daharsh’s newest painting, titled after the show, separation is marked by spherical strokes, symbolic of life’s cyclical nature. Throughout his process, Daharsh collects shells, seed pods, bark, detritus, discarded bits of metal and captures photographs of nature, most recently inspired by his time in Japan at Hayama Artist Residency. His sculptural works intertwine shells with metals reminiscent of bulbous anthropomorphic growths prompting viewers to reflect on the impact of human existence on the environment.Dancing in the Firmament engages landscapes as a site for Daharsh’s explorations of the natural and mystical world. The mystical world becomes alive with revelations of our symbiotic yet damaging affair with nature.”–Evyn Bileri Banawoye

Magic is discovered and born anew with each person living on earth in perpetuity. There is an undisputed ethereal quality that exists in the night. It is in the pregnancy of night that magic originates.&#38;nbsp; The work in this show celebrates the mysteries of the corners of the soul, from the twilight time of sunset to the darkness of the witching hour, through into the clarity of dawn.

As the sun sets, the world is thrown into a velvet blanket of silence and distortion. Since the human eye has not developed the ability to see in the dark quite as well as our animal relatives, nothing is as it seems in the dead of night. That which was familiar in the light of day is contorted and made strange by nightfall. Shadows shift forms from the known into the obscure. The moon, pale and cold, lights what it can, leaving the rest to our imagination. Objects grow curious, signs become illegible and natural textures reign. The new strangeness of the world imbues mundanity with an everlasting arcane significance. 

Of course there is a very real danger lurking in the witching hour. Suffused (infused) with the potency of night magic, there is a&#38;nbsp; mortal challenge that can make or break one’s eternal being. One must make it to the dawn of a new day following a treacherous dark night of the soul. It is said that shadows will creep in at the periphery of one’s vision whispering their nightmarish temptations, attempting to snuff out that divine light we share as a species. It is up to the individual to dispel these corruptions through the focus of one’s eyes and sheer will of spirit, in order to emerge more whole, more resplendent than before.&#38;nbsp; 

 In Palocci’s work we see the sun retreating from a large swath of land, giving away the last glimmer of its acidic green gaze to the pervasive black night. In this painting the field descends into the dark, quietly knowing and preparing for the cycle to begin. Once the sun is gone, our eyes searching in the twilight find the detritus of man is left in textural assemblages – much like the work of Christopher Daharsh. These sculptural objects seem pitted and pock-marked. Bruised and Barnacled. 

Buchanan’s midnight valley of blank facades leads us into a dream world where the viewer can explore a mysterious sacred carnival of spirit across the work’s rolling hills. While Fiona’s other paintings are shown in an idyllic daytime they suggest what one may witness at the end of a spell. Buchanan’s multicolored grasses are uncanny, like lingering illusions changing into dawn.

“Anxious times breed anxious art, as artists reflect society’s uncertainty about issues ranging from healthcare and economic security to race and gender equality, immigration policy, the impact of climate change, the chipping away at privacy and the renewed prospect of nuclear war.
Anxious Abstraction looks at how this widespread sense of insecurity is manifested in the abstract work of six artists, all based in, or with significant ties to, Kansas City.
Incorporating a myriad of symbols, compositional devices and found objects alluding to the real world, including IKEA shag rugs, fishing lures, representation of boundaries and barriers, hippie tapestries and digital images, the works in Anxious Abstraction challenge long-held formalist ideas of abstraction as an art devoted solely to the exploration of form.
Dissonant colors, off-kilter compositions, upended conventions and invocations of the irrational suffuse this exhibition with an existential anxiety that parallels our current moment and mood.
Anxious Abstraction also continues Nerman MoCA’s exploration of contemporary abstract painting. As a follow-up to Abstract KC, 2011-2012, the exhibit furthers the museum’s commitment to artists associated with Kansas City.”

 Christopher Daharsh (B. 1990, Omaha, Nebraska) received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Painting and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2012.&#38;nbsp;His practice functions as a visual filter to his pedestrian and nomadic experiences in natural and built environments.&#38;nbsp; He is searching for a level of empathy with his environment through crowd sourced mark making and the slow hand of geological time. Painterly and sculptural composites come into being in the studio tethered to the scaffolding of various forms of pictorial and assemblage traditions, using observations and objects from his excursions in the field, creating a larger, mutated whole.


Christopher has attended a number of residencies, including two yearlong residencies from the Charlotte Street Foundation (Kansas City, Missouri), Art Farm (Marquette, Nebraska), the Factatory (Lyon, France) and the Hayama Artist Residency (Hayama, Japan).&#38;nbsp; Christopher’s current curatorial practice is reflected in group exhibitions he has organized at Field of Play (Brooklyn) as well as Below Grand (NYC). Recently Christopher has shown work at Haw Contemporary (Kansas City), the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Overland Park, Kansas), Mother (Beacon, NY), Capsule Bikini (Lyon, France), Les Limbes (St. Etienne, France), Field of Play (Brooklyn), Deanna Evans (NYC), New Collectors (NYC), Underdonk (Brooklyn), Outlet Projects (NYC), My Pet Ram (NYC), Picture Theory (NYC) and Koki Arts (Tokyo). Christopher currently lives and works in Garrison, NY.
